Leica Digicat 550i Underground Cable Locator:
  
The Leica Digicat 550i provides state-of-the-art Digital Signal Processing (DSP). With the intelligent software, the Digicat i-Series locators make ground surveys a simple and speedy task increasing onsite safety and ultimately saving time and money.
The Digicat 550i locates buried conductive services by receiving electromagnetic signals which radiate from them. The Digicat's software interprets the signals and provides the operator with an audible and visual response to the position and direction of  the buried services.

With its automatic controls and combined detection mode "Auto Mode" the Digicat 550i locator has been specifically designed to reduce human error during the location process. Combined with its precise and reliable service positioning, the Digicat 550i will prevent damage to underground services during excavation projects. Active signal tracing is available when using the Digitex 100t signal generator. Digicat 550i offers the added benefit of service depth estimation, when used in conjunction with the Digitex 100t signal generator or Sonde in 8/33 kHz mode.
Available for 50 Hz or 60 Hz to suit your regions mains power frequency. 

Leica Digitex 100t Signal Transmitter: 

 

Designed in conjunction with the Digicat locator, to easily and accurately trace the route of, or locate, an underground cable or metal pipe that does not carry a naturally present signal. The Digitex 100t generates a specific "active" signal, which can then be traced using the Digicat. It allows users to trace services over a greater distance, improve service detection in areas of high signal interference and improves depth estimation when using a depth locator.

The latest Digicat 600i and 650i provide data-logging capabilities and Bluetooth connectivity for wireless data transfer. Leica Digicat 600i and 650i locate buried conductive services by receiving electromagnetic signals which radiate from them. The newly developed Logicat software interprets the signals and provides the operator with an audible and visual response to the position and direction of the buried services.

Leica Digicat Series Locators Accessories:  

  

The Digisystem has a range of accessories which extend the capabilities of the main Products. The Digisystem accessories with the exception of the Digimouse are used in conjunction with the Digitex and Digicats to trace the more tricky buried services such as sewers and ducts.

  

Digitrace


Used to trace non-metallic pipes and ducts up to 150 mm in diameter.
Must be used in conjunction with the Digitex 100t.

Property Connection Set
 

Used to trace the mains electricity service from a building. Must be used in conjunction with the Digitex 100t

   

Signal Clamp


Used to trace a particular service within a congested area, or a mains electricity service. Must be used in conjunction with the Digitex 100t.

 

Digimouse


A dual frequency signal transmitter used to trace drains, sewers and other non conductive services. It can be attached to a range of equipment including drain rods, boring tools and inspection cameras. It is powered by a 1.5 V LR6 (AA) battery, so unlike other accessories it does not require a connection to the Digitex 100t 

Operating Digicat 550i & Digitex
 
First thing to do is to remove the battery compartment cover and reverse the battery assemblies. To replace the cover, just press down and it clicks tightly into place.  

 

The 550i ON/OFF switch is the trigger.  

 

For general location, press "F" (function) button on the 550i and you normally select AUTO which combines all the other functions. If however, you know you are looking for a metal cable not carrying any current, (eg. street lighting during daylight hours) select RADIO. This is because buried metal wires and pipes re-radiate all the radio waves bouncing around in the air.  

 

If you are looking for an electrical cable that is live, then select POWER, (Unit defaults to POWER as a safety measure). The 550i triggers audio & visual signals when within 300mm of the wire as another safety precaution.

 

The arrows on the DIGITEX lid should be aligned to the most likely run of the buried service and preferably over it.  

 

Switch to the 8KHz or 30 KHz (Kilohertz frequency) when you are inducing a signal with the Earth Spike, Attach one of the alligator clips to say a tap on a gas or water line above the ground and the other to the spike. It does not matter which colour clip, the red or the black, is attached.  

 

The arrows on the DIGITEX lid should be aligned to the most likely run of the buried service and preferably over it. The cable to the Earth Spike should be at right angles to the line and the spike preferably as far away as the cable will permit.  

 

You normally work with 33Khz but if there is a cluster of services, the longer wavelengths of the 8Khz is helpful in differentiating between signals.  

 

The DIGITEX enables you to measure depths below 300mm down to 3m. If less than 300mm, hold the 550i above the ground instead of the normal "as close as possible" to the surface. Don't wave the 550i around - keep it vertical and remember you get maximum signal when holding the flat side over and at right angle to the run of the service. If you have no idea where the service is located or want to ensure nothing is missed, criss-cross the area as indicated on the graphics on the unit. These also show how you can identify the direction when you turn and get a NIL signal.  

 

You will need to invest in a DIGITRACE if you want to locate a plastic pipe or fibre-optic cable laid without any metal conductor. If the head of the TRACER hits a blockage or obstruction, you could measure the cable as you reel it back on the spool to determine where it is.  

 

If you are looking for 240V cables not active, then you get an extra good signal if you use the PROPERTY CONNECTION SET which links the DIGITEX to the 240V supply, assuming there is a socket handy.  

 

If the alligator clip on the spike is too small to snap onto the pipe above the ground, then use the DIGI SIGNAL CLAMP which has "handcuffs" to snap around a pipe up to 60mm OD (outside diameter).  

 

If excavating in a particularly dangerous area, such as buried line cables, and as an extra safety measure, you should consider investing in an EZIDIG LOCATOR which warns the operator when he is over a live wire and gives him a depth reading.
